Nearly 2000 people die from cancer of the mouth each year in this country and the figure is rising. The mouth is relatively simple to inspect using a light and mirror so it is relatively easy to find the cancer early which increases the chance of successful treatment. Unfortunately too many people come forward too late.
Mouth cancer appears in different forms. It can affect all parts of the mouth whether people have their own teeth or not. Sometimes a white or red patch on the mouth or on the tongue may develop into cancer. However, it most often appears as a painless ulcer that does not clear up.
The main problem is that people don't visit their dentist for a regular check-up, a dental check-up does not cover just teeth but the whole oral cavity. You should see your dentist at least once a year for a check-up even if you have dentures. This is especially important if you smoke and drink, even more so if you are over 40 years old.

If you should see a white or red patch or painless ulcer in your mouth, see your dentist straight away.
