NHS and private treatment

This surgery is committed to achieving the highest standards possible for our patients. Whether you choose NHS or Private treatment, the quality and standards you receive will not be compromised. However, there are a range of higher quality dental items which we cannot offer you at the present time as the government will not contribute towards payment. As the patient you will incur 80% of the total cost of your NHS treatment and the additional 20% is subsidised by the government, this is unless you are currently receiving benefits or maternity exemption.

In the practice most patients are treated under the National Health Service, some patients may choose to be treated privately while those patients who are treated under the NHS may choose to have certain items of treatment provided privately, for example tooth whitening and white fillings on back teeth are not allowed under the NHS regulations.

Some people may decide to have items such as crowns, bridges or dentures provided privately. This service allows us to offer you a higher level of treatment, which enables a wider choice of restorations. When this work is produced in the laboratory, higher quality materials are used thus giving a more natural appearance. As the patient you will pay the total cost of your private treatment as this is not subsidised by the government.

White porcelain or gold crowns are not allowed under NHS regulations on posterior teeth, only silver metal crowns. The silver metal crown provides a perfectly adequate restoration however a porcelain crown has better aesthetics while a gold crown is a softer material with a wear resistance more similar to natural teeth which can result in a more comfortable, better fitting crown.
